Hello everyone, I’m Sally Jenkins, and today we’re talking with Ted Cook, a skilled elder protection attorney here in sunny San Diego. Ted, thanks so much for joining me.
What Inspired You to Focus on Elder Protection?
It’s my pleasure, Sally. You know, I’ve always been drawn to helping people who are vulnerable. Seeing seniors mistreated or taken advantage of really ignited a fire in me. It’s incredibly rewarding to use my legal skills to protect those who have dedicated their lives to building our communities.
Can You Walk Us Through the Steps Involved in Elder Protection?
Certainly. The process starts with understanding the client’s situation, which involves a thorough intake and consultation. We then carefully assess the legal issues at hand and gather all necessary evidence. Based on that, we determine the best course of action – whether it’s pursuing emergency legal remedies, implementing financial protections, or navigating healthcare and living arrangements.

- Case Resolution & Follow-Up
Ted, Let’s Dive into Protective Actions – What Does That Typically Entail?
That step is often crucial and time-sensitive. We may need to immediately file for restraining orders or protective injunctions if a senior is in danger of physical harm. Reporting suspected elder abuse to Adult Protective Services (APS) is also essential. Sometimes, pursuing guardianship or conservatorship becomes necessary when a senior lacks the capacity to make sound decisions for themselves.
“It’s amazing what Ted was able to do for my grandmother. She was being financially exploited by someone she trusted, and Ted stepped in and stopped it before things got worse. He truly cares about his clients.”
-Maria Sanchez, Point Loma Resident
There have been instances where obtaining a guardianship can be challenging. I recall one case involving a family dispute over who should be the guardian for their elderly mother. Emotions were running high, and it took careful negotiation and mediation to reach a solution that was in everyone’s best interest.
-John Miller, La Jolla Resident
“Ted helped my father navigate some complex legal issues after he was diagnosed with dementia. He explained everything clearly and patiently, and I felt confident that my dad was being well-represented.”
